NEARLY HALF OF CANADIANS PLAN TO MAKE HEALTHY DIETARY CHANGES; MAJORITY WILLING TO ADD OMEGA-3 FOODS TO THEIR DIET

Canadians can now get their daily suggested intake with an Omega 3 Power Breakfast

Toronto, ON – (February 16, 2005) – Starting the day off right with a healthy omega-3 breakfast may be one of the most important decisions Canadians make to support a healthy lifestyle. Important news if you are one of the 46 per cent of Canadians planning to make the switch to healthier eating in the next six months, according to a recent Parmalat / Ipsos-Reid survey, which also found many of these new healthy eaters lack information on essential nutrients and how to incorporate them into their diet. For example, when asked about the essential nutrient omega-3, which can only be obtained through diet, 49 per cent have heard little (25 per cent) to nothing at all (24 per cent) about it and only half (51 per cent) say they are aware of what foods and beverages contain omega-3.

“Canadians are getting less than one third of their daily omega-3 because food options have been so restrictive and inconvenient,” says Gina Sunderland, Registered Dietitian. “Omega-3 is an essential nutrient that helps in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, and normal growth and development. It is important for Canadians to make omega-3 part of their daily diet and now it’s as easy as starting the day with an omega-3 rich breakfast.”

New ways to get omega-3

The introduction of new Omega 3 products by Parmalat Canada -- milk, cheese, yogourt and margarine -- is designed to help Canadians include the essential nutrient in their diet. Until now, the most common source of omega-3 has been cold water fish which can be difficult for time-starved Canadians to include in their weekly meal planning. When given the choice of getting omega-3 through other more convenient food options Canadians indicated that cheese (83 per cent), milk (80 per cent) and yogourt (72 per cent) were among their most preferred options. Only 33 per cent of respondents were willing to get omega-3 by adding fish oil supplements, such as cod liver oil.

Omega-3 Food Option Omega-3/per serving
Black Diamond DHA Omega 3 Natural Cheese 100 mg / 30 g
Beatrice Omega 3 Milk Beverage 300 mg / 250 ml
ASTRO BioBest Omega 3 Yogourt 300 mg / 113 g
Lactantia Healthy Attitude Omega 3 Margarine 500 mg / 10 g

“Parmalat is leading the way in developing innovative dairy products for Canadians,” says Cheryl Smith, Vice President of Marketing, Parmalat Canada. “Recognizing the need for Canadians to increase the amount of omega-3 in their diets, Parmalat has created a line of Omega 3 products that make it easy for them to make healthier choices with great tasting foods they already enjoy as part of their diets.”

The Omega 3 Power Breakfast is served

To enjoy the health benefits of omega-3, scientific studies suggest a minimum intake of 1200 mg or 1.2 g* per day. Studies indicate that most Canadians are not even meeting basic nutrition requirements.**

Here’s how you can reach your omega-3 target at the breakfast table during the first meal of the day:

  • One serving of Black Diamond DHA Omega 3 Natural Cheese
  • One serving of Lactantia Healthy Attitude Omega 3 Margarine on toast
  • One serving of Beatrice Omega 3 Milk Beverage
  • One serving of ASTRO BioBest Omega 3 Yogourt

Choose your favourites — any combination of the above equalling 1200 mg meets your full suggested daily intake of omega-3. Canadians can easily make the first decision of the day the right decision with a simple switch from their breakfast favourites to omega-3 better-for-you products. The easiest way to ensure you have your suggested daily omega-3 requirement is with the first meal of the day – a healthy, tasty and convenient breakfast.

About The Survey

These are the findings of an Ipsos-Reid/Parmalat poll conducted from January 11th to January 13th, 2004. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1000 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within ±3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to the 2001 Census data.
