PARMALAT CANADA BIG WINNER AT 5TH CANADIAN CHEESE GRAND PRIX

TORONTO – (April 20, 2006) – Parmalat Canada is pleased to announce three first place awards at the 5th Canadian Cheese Grand Prix from the Dairy Farmers of Canada. Parmalat won first place in each of the Fresh Cheese category for Feta (Black Diamond), the Medium Cheddar category for Balderson Medium and Old and Extra Old Cheddar category for Balderson 5 Year Heritage Cheddar.

These three awards brought Parmalat’s total standing to nine awards - the largest number of first place Championship shows for cheddar than any other cheese manufacturer in Canada. "We are thrilled and deeply gratified to see that our Cheese Makers have been recognized in so many first place Championships for the Balderson Cheese Brand," says Mike Sobol, Senior Brand Manager - Deli.

From 189 entries, Parmalat was selected as a finalist in the following categories:

  • Fresh Cheese
    Feta - Thornloe Plant
  • Semi-Soft Cheese
    Monterey Jack - Grunthal Plant
  • Flavoured Cheese (with non particulate Flavouring)
Double Smoked Cheddar - Balderson Brand
  • Medium Cheddar - Balderson Brand
  • Old - Extra Old Cheddar
    Balderson 3 year Heritage Cheddar
  • Old - Extra Old Cheddar
    Balderson 5 Year Heritage Cheddar

Parmalat’s awards were accepted by Rejean Galipeau, Parmalat’s Cheese Specialist and Master Cheese Maker. According to Mr. Galipeau, "Parmalat's many first place awards are the result of focusing on quality and having a total team commitment to making the best in Canadian cheese."

Entries underwent a rigorous judging process where they were evaluated according to well-defined criteria, including flavour, colour, texture, body, firmness, general appearance, and salt content. To be eligible for the Grand Prix, cheeses must be made in Canada with cow’s milk from Canadian dairy farms and available to consumers at the time they are judged. Entries are judged by a panel of 26 people that represent a cross section of regions and expertise in the food and cheese sector.

This year’s Awards Gala was held at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto and was hosted by Chef Michael Smith. The Canadian Cheese Grand Prix is a prestigious competition held every two years by the Dairy Farmers of Canada to recognize the best of the best in Canadian cheese making.
