PARMALAT CANADA WINS BIG AT 2006 ROYAL AGRICULTURAL WINTER FAIR AND BRITISH EMPIRE CHEESE SHOW

TORONTO – (December 7, 2006) – Parmalat Canada is pleased to announce that several of its products won top honours at the 2006 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair’s Royal Dairy Products Show and the British Empire Cheese Show.

“We’re ecstatic about the numerous accolades Parmalat’s cheeses received at the Winter Fair and British Empire Cheese Show,” says Brian Hind, Vice President, Operations of the Dairy Food Group. “These awards are the direct result of our commitment to manufacturing high-quality products with best-in-class processes. We’d like to thank our skilled and dedicated employees at our Winchester, Belleville and Victoriaville facilities for consistently producing some of the country’s best cheeses – and getting recognized for it.”

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

Parmalat excelled in every class of the Cheddar Cheese category by winning the Grand Champion award for Balderson Stilton and the Reserve Champion ranking for Balderson Old Cheddar among others. All cheddars were produced at Parmalat’s Winchester plant. Judges awarded points for flavour, texture, closeness, colour and finish. Judging was conducted by graders from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Parmalat also triumphed in the Variety Cheese category in a number of classes, including first place in the firm class for Monterey Jack produced at the Winchester plant, and it placed well with Racolli Mozzarella in the pasta filata class produced at the Victoriaville plant. Judges awarded points for flavour, body and spreadability, body and texture, finish, colour, appearance, salt and packaging.

The Royal Agricultural Winter Dairy Products Competition recognizes excellence in the production of Canadian cheese and butter.

British Empire Cheese Show

Parmalat’s results at the British Empire awards were also outstanding with several first-place winnings, including the honour of Grand Champion for Balderson’s 5 Year Heritage Cheddar in the Extra Mature Cheddar Cheese category. In the Specialty Cheese category, Balderson’s Double Smoked won in the flavoured firm class and took home top honours for its Racolli Mozzarella in the pasta filata class, produced at the Victoriaville plant.

Parmalat also stood out in the Process Cheese and Butter categories, receiving top rankings for its Black Diamond Ribbon Slices, produced at the Belleville plant and Lactantia 454g Unsalted Prints Butter produced at the Winchester plant.

Parmalat scored an impressive eight, first-place showings as well as the CFF Stainless Steel Award for the Cheesemaker having the highest aggregate score in all six of the cheddar cheese classes. The Grand Championship, won by Rejean Galipeau of Parmalat’s Winchester plant, is awarded to the Cheesemaker with the highest score in the cheddar cheese classes.

The British Empire Cheese Show has been judging entries from its members as well as cheese plants from across Canada for 79 years.

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair winners were announced on November 1 in Toronto and judging for the British Empire Cheese Show occurred on November 30 in Belleville, Ontario.
